Dental Implants
A dental implant is a permanent tooth restoration solution for patients with one or more missing teeth. The implant post fuses to the jaw bone, providing stimulation and preventing bone loss. Dental implants can replace one missing tooth or an entire arch of teeth with full-arch restoration. The crown is designed to match the shape, color, and size of the surrounding teeth, making it indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
The average mouth can only hold 32 teeth, so an extra set of molars squeezing in can cause problems. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, develop around the age of 17. They should be removed early to prevent dental overcrowding or pushing other teeth out of alignment. An impacted wisdom tooth is one that is trapped beneath the gum and can lead to infections, cysts, or tumors. Dentists and oral surgeons recommend having these third molars extracted before they can cause complications.
Cleft Lip and Palate
Dr. Galea is an expert in managing cleft lip and cleft palate cases and is the region’s only fellowship-trained Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Surgeon. A cleft lip or palate occurs when the portions of a child’s face do not properly meet during pregnancy, resulting in a gap in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth, or both. A child with a cleft lip or palate may have difficulty feeding, a nasal-sounding voice, or frequent ear infections. If left untreated, the child may experience difficulty eating and speaking, dental problems, hearing loss, and feel self-conscious about their appearance as he or she gets older. A child born with a cleft lip or cleft palate should undergo initial oral surgery around the age of one, and when treated early, many children born with clefts go on to lead normal, healthy lives.
Why Choose an Oral Surgeon
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons must undergo an oral surgery residency program after completing dental school. During this time, they gain hands-on experience treating patients in a hospital setting. They are trained to safely administer sedation, including general anesthesia, and diagnose patients with a variety of needs. Our surgeon, Dr. Galea, took his expertise further by obtaining a medical degree in addition to his dental, making him highly qualified to diagnose and treat his patients from dental and medical perspectives. He is also a board-certified oral surgeon and is held to the highest standards of patient care.
